When a flower doesn't bloom, you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower! -Alex den heijer ❤️ Maiya wasn't communicating with us normally when she was a toddler. We tried everything on our own to help her use primary communication mode (American Sign Language.) We just felt like something was wrong because her older sister could communicate in ASL just fine. Every child is learns differently. Something pushed us immediately! We decided one day and moved 8 hours south, over the following weekend. We moved and changed the environment from being in a hearing school based environment (we didn't live in a city with a Deaf school) with NO other Deaf/ASL peers over to California School for the Deaf in Southern California, Riverside where 100% signing & Deaf peers and teachers surrounded our very struggling Maiya and frustrated parents. She bloomed 3 years of academic growth within 1 year and now is a chatterbox. #deafeducation environment makes a difference in her life despite our 8 deaf generations carrying family. We are beyond grateful for the environment that helped Maiya connect! #americansignlanguage #deafcommunity #whyisign
